| ZAKK
WYLDE
This interview transcript comes from the late summer of 2000 as was done
in-person on Zack Wylde's tour bus in Detroit, MI.
DAVID LEE I know that we are supposed to be here to talk about your new record but I have a bit of a family problem that I was hoping you could help me with. I was going through my sons dresser the other day and I was just mortified to find a couple of LIMP BIZKIT CDs, do you think that you could have a talk with him and try to set him straight?(Smile) ZAKK WYLDE (Laughing) Oh no! Well, how old is he? DL Seven. ZW Yeah, you see, if he was seventeen or eighteen, Yeah, then I would have a talk with him but seven, that is about the age for that crap.(laughs) DL So I shouldn't worry too much? ZW Naw, he will be alright.(laughs) DL OK, serious stuff now, you are just finished with this "ROCK STAR" movie, how was that experience? ZW Yeah, the movie is all done now, Mark Walberg and Jennifer Anniston are in it so it should be something I guess. Obviously I haven't seen the movie or anything but when I was down there you would see all the dailies and everything but I know that Mark (Walberg) called Nick (Cantonese - bassist for BLACK LABEL SOCIETY) up and was telling him what a great movie it was so we will see. DL It seems that everyone that I have spoken with about the movie had an extremely good time making it. ZW Oh yeah, we all had a blast. It was a totally painless experience, you know? I mean, I have done videos before and the movie was pretty much the same thing. Lets put it like this, it was the easiest batch of change that I have ever made.(laughs) You would just sit around all day and jam on the guitar and lift weights and stuff like that. DL And the movie itself is set in the Metal scene of the mid-eighties so it doesn't seem like it would have been much of a stretch for you and the other guys, well maybe Marky Mark would have trouble relating?(laughs) ZW Brutal! Yeah, early eighties, mid eighties with the big hair and with the music it was like JUDAS PRIEST's "SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE" era stuff, it is Metal and not Rock, you know what I mean? DL Right, but they wanted to go for that wider audience I guess so they changed the name from "METAL GOD" to "ROCK GOD" and then to "ROCK STAR?" ZW I guess, who knows. DL What of the soundtrack, I mean the disc that will be the soundtrack not what is actually in the movie. ZW I don't know what they are doing with that because it is like I know what we played and all of the music that we did but as far as the rest of the soundtrack, there might be a bunch of other stuff on it that I don't know about. DL Didn't you write a song or two for it? ZW Yeah, I wrote a song called "Prophet of Falsehood" on it but that was it because they already had a bunch of pre-existing songs, Twiggy Ramirez wrote a song, you know they already had certain songs that they were going to film for the movie, certain scenes so those songs, we just learned them and did them. DL Can't wait to see it. Well, this tour is no less interesting for you either I am guessing. I just read on the Internet last night that all your tour support was pulled and your buddies in CROWBAR had to fall of the tour, must be a pain in the ass to just keep it going? ZW Where was that? DL Christ, I don't know, some Metal news site. ZW No, we are going to end the tour because I am going to go home, you see, I am going to start working with Ozzy again and I have to mix a live album, edit the video and I just can't do all of that when we are out on the road. Other than that we could stay out on the road and headline as long as we wanted to. DL Wow, another bag of bullshit from the Internet, imagine that?(laughs) ZW Yeah, it is always out there. What happened with the CROWBAR guys is that they were pulling support on those guys. DL Are the plans for BLS heading out with PANTERA still good? ZW Hopefully. Maybe we can get out there with them in November or something like that, it would be PANTERA, MORBID ANGEL, KITTIE and us so hopefully that will happen. DL Sounds like a killer one, save the girls. ZW Yeah, there is no Rap on the tour so that is good!(laughs) DL Where was the live disc taped and was it on this tour? ZW Yeah. We recorded the shows at various places all over the States and what we are going to do is either take the best performances or maybe just one take from one evening. It will be a real live record too, none of this garbage where it is like everyone goes in and re-makes the record, you know? What the fuck, if I wanted to hear the studio version I would listen to the studio version from the original record!(laughs) DL I agree, why not have a live record actually be live? Anyway, with that said, I remember picking up the "LIVE AND LOUD" live disc you did with Ozzy and that sounded a bit too glossy to be totally live, did Ozzy have you "fix" that one in the studio? ZW No, I didn't do anything on that record. That was the "Michael Wagoner mix" on that thing. You can tell that I didn't fix anything that I did for that record because the guitars are one single guitar and there are no rhythm tracks behind any of my solos, it is just the bass. DL Will this live record be all BLS material or will you have things from the other projects or even Ozzy? ZW No, it is all BLACK LABEL stuff. DL After all that and the Ozzy record I also heard that you are going to do a record with Derek Sherinian from DREAM THEATER? ZW Yeah, totally. Well, he wants me to play on his record so if I can do it, yeah. You know, Derek is a friend so when he asked me I said, "Sure, no problem." DL When I last spoke with him he seemed pretty excited about working with you that is for sure. ZW That guy is hysterical, totally. I am sure that there will be a lot of ripping stuff on there because he is really a killer keyboard player. DL That is something that you don't use much of on your own discs, keyboards? ZW No, well, I like some piano on there sometimes but, you know, no Rob Zombie type stuff. I mean, that is great for Rob but I have enough problems dialing the phone let alone dealing with a synthesizer on stage.(laughs) DL Not that you would really want to but it seems like you just can't cut totally loose from Ozzy, so what is it, you are going to write a record with him now? ZW Yeah, we will probably start in the beginning of October. With Ozzy it is like. . .it is like the guys in SOILENT GREEN, some of those guys have other bands, GOATWHORE and shit like that and with me and Ozzy it is like, at the end of the day it is all about the music anyway. I am buds with Ozzy and it is not like, "Oh god, I have got to work with him and I can't stand the guy," you know what I mean? If it was like that I would never do it. I mean, take any of these BLACK LABEL records and put Ozzy's vocals on it and it is a new Ozzy record so it is not like I am working on an EAGLES record or something.(laughs) Which wouldn't be too bad either but this is easy for me and I am writing all the time anyway. DL You are certainly a very busy and in-demand guy for sure. Does it feel like you may never get home to see the wife and kids sometimes? ZW Yeah, well we bring them out on the road with us sometimes, like
the Ozz-Fest dates and stuff like that. You know the kids just hang
in the back and watch Cartoon Network and stuff like that so it is cool.
If you are married and you want to make it happen you can't just not
see each other, I mean, I am not going to make this (touring) a jail
sentence where I go out on the road and don't see my family for three
and four months at a time, the hell with that. If it was like that I
wouldn't bother touring. |
