Illnath - Angelic Voices Calling (MCD)
Self-financed, 2001
7/10
Vincent Eldefors

This is without a doubt the most professional release I've ever heard from an unsigned band. The production is flawless and I suspect the work on this MCD cost the band a lot of money. Illnath is also the first black metal band from Denmark I've ever heard. "Angelic Voices Calling" was originally meant to feature the drumming of Tjodalv (Susperia, ex-Dimmu Borgir) but since the band eventually found a drummer of their own they decided to use his talents instead. Illnath is a very modern and powerful sounding black metal band with plenty of great heavy riffing, pounding drums and very grim but still dynamic vocals. Except for commercial black metal the band members are also very much influenced by the heavy metal of the 80's which is perhaps the reason for their riff-happy way of playing. The band also has a very good keyboard player as heard most evidently on the beautiful intro. Illnath is a band on the rise and I have no doubt that they will receive several offers from record labels all over the world in the near future.

1. Ancient Legacy
2. Death Becomes All
