Rammstein - Mutter
Motor Music, 2001
9.5/10
Vincent Eldefors

The long awaited third studio album from Rammstein is finally here and they are kind enough to stick with their old unique sound that no other band has ever used before. Their mix of techno beats and industrial metal together with the strong vocals is the key to the success of Rammstein. There are definitely not only metal fans who have found a way to appreciate these ground-breaking Germans. It´s hard to tell if this album is better or worse than the two previous ones. It is a little bit slower than the last one but at the same time also a little heavier. What brings it down a level is that there are a few semi-ballad songs on the album. The vocals are powerful and dramatic but not really suited for traditional ballads. On their live album "Live Aus Berlin" they had an amazing ballad called "Wilder Wein" but this time their experimental ballad tendencies have failed. What makes this album one of the best releases this year is the powerful songs like "Mein Herz Brennt", "Ich Will" and "Feuer Frei!" with heavy driving power chords in the foreground and dreamlike keyboard melodies in the background. These are the most important trademarks of Rammstein and if they lose them they would probably not be a band worth that much attention. They are playing a little on the edge right now but hopefully they will not turn even more pop-commercial and slower with the next release. Hopefully we will not have to wait as long for the fourth album either. This is definitely music to play loud, otherwise you will not experience the real power and quality of Rammstein. They are still the No 1 industrial metal band but they have to watch out in the future. Metallica has succeeded in changing their style over the years but they have been able to incorporate new elements in their music, something Rammstein has not done so far. If Rammstein wants to change they do not really have that much to work with. Hopefully they´ll be back harder and more powerful next time, otherwise they´re out walking on thin ice in my opinion.
