David Binney – Alto, Soprano, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Vocal

Edward Simon – Piano

Having played with a duo on numerous occasions due to the UK’s strange licensing laws or the small amount of money available to pay the musicians, I would never crave it out of choice! David Binney is a much better musician than I am, but this still sounds to me like a band that needs a bass player and a drummer.

Both of the musicians here are of the very best, but having heard this record I am now convinced that this format does not work for anyone. The most successful track is the old standard ‘I hear a Rhapsody’. The best you can do therefore is to play things that are familiar, Binney & Simon have some interesting new music here, but to me it is hard to listen to because there is no real beat the majority of the time.

Please RED records lets hear these guys with a full rhythm section in a set containing a few standards, just so that old duffers like me can get with it!
