Milt Jackson – Vibes

Freddie Hubbard – Trumpet/Flugel

Herbie Hancock – Jay Berliner – guitar

Ron Carter – bass

Bill Cobham – drums

Ralph MacDonald – percussion

Plus reeds and strings

What a disappointment track one was, here are a collection of my favourite jazz musicians playing something with no form, no tune and no interest for me whatever. Why did they do it?

Fortunately on track two sanity returns and we have one of the nicest ballads of all time, but even on this track leaving out Creed Taylor’s trademark strings and reeds, would have been a great improvement, they just get in the way. At least we have a chance to hear the incredible improvisations of these jazz masters however.

The sleeve notes say that his was taking Milt Jackson out of the comfort zone of The modern Jazz Quartet and into the new music of the contemporary genre. The truth of the matter is the only time any of it really takes off is on SKJ a good old-fashioned 12 bar blues!
