AVIE GARNERS GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR

LORRAINE HUNT LIEBERSON’S HANDEL ARIAS

7 December 2004 – Avie Records has received a Grammy Nomination in the Best Classical Vocal Performance category for the CD of Handel Arias by mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it was announced today in Los Angeles by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

The Grammy Nomination represents the latest in a string of successes for Hunt Lieberson’s Handel CD (AV 0030). Released in June 2004, the recording, released in Hybrid SACD format, has been praised by the press worldwide as "hypnotising," "priceless," and "sumptuous," among other superlatives. It has secured Top 10 chart positions in the UK and the US. It has been one of the most talked about classical CDs of the year.

The Handel Arias recording was the brainchild of Harry Bicket, who conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on this CD. During their run of the critically acclaimed Peter Sellars’ production of Theodora at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2003, the musicians made studio recordings of the arias of Hunt Lieberson’s character Irene. The CD was completed with two arias from Serse, including the evergreen Ombra mai fù, and the cantata La Lucrezia.

Avie Records is the independent classical label that was launched in 2002 with a unique business model based on artist-ownership. This is Avie’s second Grammy nomination, the first coming in the label’s first year for The Dufay Collective’s Cancionero: Music for the Spanish Court, 1470 – 1520 (AV 0005).
