PERFORMANCE:

On Friday 17th October at the Circle Cafe, Northampton Jesus Centre, Abington Square, Northampton there will be a special evening celebrating the life and work of William Alwyn under the title of 'Music From The Heart'. Film clips and recordings of the concert works will be featured during the course of the evening. The programme begins at 7.30pm and concludes at 10pm. PUBLICATIONS:

Due from Boydell & Brewer on 18th September is the first full length biography of William Alwyn written by Adrian Wright. The book is entitled 'The Innumerable Dance - The Life and Work of William Alwyn.' The book will be published in hardback format only at a price of £30.00. RECORDINGS:

The SOMM label, in their Beecham Collection series, have issued for the first time the World Premier Performance of Alwyn's 3rd Symphony which took place at the Royal Festival Hall on 10th October 1956 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Also included on the disc are Mozart's Symphony No.29 in A K201 recorded at the same concert and Grieg's Symphonic Dances Op.64. The latter is a studio broadcast from Maida Vale recorded in 1955. The catalogue number is SOMM-BEECHAM 23. review

In January the Lyrita label released it's final Alwyn recordings - the song cycle 'Mirages,' Divertimento' for solo flute, 'Naiades' for flute and harp and the Sonata alla Toccata and Fantasy Waltzes for piano solo. The artists are Benjamin Luxon (baritone), David Willison (piano), Christopher Hyde-Smith (flute), Marisa Robles (harp) and Sheila Randell (piano in the two solo piano works). this is a 2-CD set with the catalogue number SRCD 293. review

Recently released by Albany Records in the U.S.A. is a CD that contains two Alwyn works - Fanfare for a Joyful Occasion and the Concerto for Flute and Eight Wind Instruments. The soloist in the Concerto is Mary Stolper with the DePaul University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Donald DeRoche. The disc has the overall title of "Music for Joyful Occasions" and bears the catalogue number TROY 1006.

Naxos:
1. Due in July is an orchestral disc containing the following works: Overture to a Masque, Concerto Grosso No.1, Pastoral Fantasia, Five Preludes (World Premiere Recording), Tragic Interlude, Autumn Legend and Suite of Scottish Dances. The artists are Philip Dukes (viola), RLPO conducted by David Lloyd Jones. The disc has the catalogue number 8.570704.
2. Due in September is a second volume of piano music from Ashley Wass containing the following works: Twelve Preludes, Movements, Night Thoughts, Contes Barbares-Homage to Paul Gauguin, Two Irish Pieces, Water Lilies, Cinderella and Hunter's Moon. The last five titles are all World Premiere Recordings. The catalogue number is 8.570464.
3. Due in November are the String Quartets 1-3 plus the World Premier Recording of Novelette as performed by the Maggini Quartet. The catalogue number is 8.570560.
